Water treadmill training is barrier-free strength and conditioning training without the weight of a ride on the horse’s back. The hydrostatic pressure from the water has been shown to improve recovery time from lower limb injuries such as straining to the SDFT. Working through water increases the range of limb mobility, Therefore, encouraging core engagement and stability. The properties of water allow for a reduced weight-bearing, non-concussive workout all while positively training the thoracic and lumbar spine areas. Using the water treadmill as part of your horse’s regular training plan has been shown to improve stride length, muscle tone, and overall suppleness which in turn leads to increased performance and reduced risk of injury, the many other benefits of use of a water treadmill are:

  1. Controlled Exercise Environment.
  1. Rehabilitation: Treadmills are valuable tools for rehabilitating injured or post-surgery horses. The controlled movement on a treadmill allows for gradual and targeted recovery (Kaplan et al., 2007).
  1. Muscle Conditioning and Cardiovascular Fitness: Treadmills help in improving a horse’s cardiovascular fitness and muscle conditioning. The consistent movement encourages muscle development and cardiovascular endurance (White et al., 2000).
  1. Gait Analysis: Treadmills enable detailed gait analysis, which is beneficial for identifying lameness or gait abnormalities in horses. This can aid in diagnosis and treatment planning (Keegan et al., 2018).
  1. Training Efficiency: Treadmills allow trainers to optimize training efficiency by controlling variables like speed and incline. This can be particularly useful for conditioning racehorses or sports horses (Rossdale, 2004).
  1. Reduced Wear and Tear on Natural Surfaces: Regular exercise on natural surfaces can lead to wear and tear on a horse’s joints and hooves. Treadmills offer a more forgiving surface, reducing the risk of injuries associated with hard or uneven terrain (Hoffman et al., 2000).
